Frequently Asked Questions

Can children travel?

Lola has 3 point seat-belts in the front (as all our VWs have) & lap-belts in the back. Ziggy and Blondie have 1x over the shoulder seatbelt & 1 lapbelt in the back. Agnes has 2 x over the shoulder seatbelts in the back. You must bring a child-seat suitable for your child, which complies with UK law. Due to recommendations on rear facing seats for infants, we do not recommend infants under the age of 5 travel in any of our vehicles.

Can we order online shopping to be delivered before we pick up our camper?

Sorry this is suspended during pandemic.

Are the campers fitted with smoke alarms & carbon monoxide detectors & fire extinguishers?

Are you gas safe approved?

Yes and certified annually.

Can I drive the vans without a UK/European driver licence?

Please do not book our campervans unless you have driven a manual transmission vehicle on the left hand side of the road, within the last two years. We can insure many nationalities, provided they have this experience.

I have points on my licence can I drive a Vintage VW Camper?

Persons who have been convicted of an offence in connection with the driving of a motor vehicle or motorcycle and/or have had their driving licence endorsed or suspended or penalty points imposed. Parking and not more than two speeding offences in the past 3 years may be ignored.  “Spent” convictions, covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 may be disregarded.

What age do you need to be to drive the van?

Our insurance covers those between 23 and 70 years of age, who have held a full UK/EU driving licence for 24 months or longer.

What insurance comes with the van?

The self-drive hire campers come with fully comprehensive insurance for up to 4 drivers, some exclusions apply. Details are here.

Can we bring our pet?

Yes, well-behaved dogs are welcome when disclosed at booking stage and a charge of £20 for extra deep clean would be made per pet per hire. All of our campervans are dog friendly. Dog owners should bring waterproof dog blanket and suitable car restraint or small cage.

Are the vehicles reliable?

Our campers are over 40 years old and still running well; the VW Camper was built to last. Our campers have reconditioned engines and lots of new parts (clutch, brakes etc.) They are regularly serviced and go through strict safety checks, between each hire. Should the camper break down we have full breakdown cover and emergency roadside assistance. If the patrol is unable to fix at the roadside, your group would be taken to an agreed destination and the camper returned to us for repair. In this instance we will endeavour to get a replacement camper to you. Should this not be possible, we would refund the remaining fraction of your holiday cost. Please be aware that should the van you are travelling in break down on an island, or more than 150 miles from our HQ, we are unlikely to be able to get a replacement vehicle to you.

How can I pay?

You can pay by bank transfer, credit or debit card or through Paypal

Why do you need to take a security deposit and when will it be returned?

We need to take a security deposit in a traceable amount, not cash, for insurance purposes. It is £500 and will be returned to you in full approximately 14 days after the safe return of our camper, provided you return it in same condition and have not incurred any parking or speeding charges. We reserve the right to deduct from your deposit in such instances.

Can we take the campers out of Scotland?

The campers can be taken anywhere on mainland Scotland and northern half of England & any Scottish Islands, except Shetland.

What if we need to cancel?

If you are unable to make the holiday you have planned, we can only refund you if you cancel out-with the six-week period prior to departure, having paid in advance. The deposit of £150 made at booking point is non-refundable at any time. Vouchers are also non-refundable.

Yes, more info here

What do I need to bring with me?

Bring your own sleeping bag or duvet and bottom sheet or we can provide sleeping bag, pillow and towels at a charge of £20 per person. Other than that, you probably only need to bring some clothes and toiletries with you.

How many do they seat/sleep?

All our self- drive bay window campervans have seatbelts for four people, except Blondie, who has a fifth belted buddy seat. All have a 3/4 width rock and roll bed downstairs, which sleeps two adults, except Ziggy and Agnes who have a large double bed downstairs. All have an optional over-cab hammock, which will hold a child or small person, up to 35Kg.  By adding the Nodpod to your booking for Lola, Agnes or Blondie, you have room for another two adults, or three children/ teenagers to sleep in there.  Blondie has a large double bed in her roof  and Ziggy and Agnes have a 3/4 size double bed upstairs, due to the roofspace, these are best suited to children. Our awnings add extra room for living and space for 2 more to sleep.

Meg goes out on daily chauffeur driven hires only and has space for seven passengers plus our chauffeur.

Is there a limit to the daily mileage?

Yes, for 2015 we have found it necessary to introduce this for our self drive campers. Your daily mileage is 150 miles, averaged by your total number of nights, so picking up at 10am Friday and returning 11am Monday would give you 450 miles. Going over this will mean a 60p per mile over charge, taken from your security deposit.

Will I get instructions on how to drive the van?

Yes, we will show you how everything works, from front cab (driving controls) to how to operate electrics, cooking equipment and pop top roof, where relevant. You will also be given a van handbook with further info to take with you.

What are they like to drive?

The campers are historic vehicles with character, they do not have power steering and they only have four gears. Our Bay Windows (for self-drive hire) are right hand drive. Our self-drive insurance covers 4 named drivers (exclusions apply) allowing you all to enjoy the experience. We will show you how everything works and there are quiet roads nearby if you need to build confidence before taking off on your holiday. It doesn’t take most people long to settle into enjoying the drive. Keep the speed down – you should not drive above 55 mph – these vans were built in the 1960s and 70s. You will find the gears and brakes very different to modern cars and it is advisable to leave lots of space and allow lots of time for braking and gear changing. Don’t let your van struggle up hills – better to change down and keep the revs up. Please do not book our campervans unless you have driven a manual transmission vehicle on the left hand side of the road, within the last two years. We welcome good, careful drivers only.
